It would make total sense to describe this artist as one of today’s Detroit legends – and yes, he is – but Omar S is simply Omar S. Releasing his own music since the early ’00s and operating 100% independently up to his present-day stardom, the producer’s expansive and ever-expanding sound ranges from uplifting vocal house to abstracted techno and instrumental hip-hop. In the same boundless but steadfast way, his warm-blooded DJ sets – which he intentionally keeps under the three-hour mark for maximum impact – are always a splendid surprise. Or, as Omar himself would say: “All my fans know I don’t just play house, techno or disco. Wherever I go, I just make some stuff up.”
