Nazar (DJ)

Nazar's richly conceptual productions explore the legacy of the Angolan Civil War. On his debut EP Enclave and stunning follow-up album Guerrilla, both released by Hyperdub, he transposed the lithe rhythms of kuduro – one of Angola's national musical traditions – onto brutal, militaristic samples. The result is gut-wrenching, industrial bass: cold synths interwoven with cascading percussion, machine-gun fire and the dive-bomb swoop of fighter jets. His track selection similarly brims with an intense physicality – often drawing links with other South African styles such as gqom, Nazar embraces the potentiality of electronica to convey serious ideas and political statements without compromising on dancefloor resonance.
