Sun Ra Arkestra
AUG 3 / Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ
Space will indeed be the place, as the Afrofuturist jazz-ensemble Sun Ra Arkestra, now under the stewardship of 92-year old saxophone player Marshall Allen, will convene for Dekmantel’s opening gala. Still adorned in their mythic, Egyptian robes, and toiling out their radical, freeform-futurist jazz, the Arkestra are still a formidable act, even after the passing of pioneering bandleader Sun Ra. There is perhaps no-one as iconic or as influential within the jazz circuit at present than these other-wordly –and at the same time elderly- jazz beatnicks.
